Accessibility

TaleemPK is intended to remain usable for a person with limited vision, a person unable to use a mouse, or a person accessing the platform over a slow connection on an older device. This document sets out the measures implemented to date, and, of equal importance, the limitations known to remain.

1. Measures implemented

  • Keyboard accessibility. Every control is reachable via the Tab key and operable via Enter or Space. Focus indication remains visible and is not suppressed by styling.
  • Screen reader compatibility. Interface controls carry labels, images carry alternative text, and page structure employs semantic headings and landmarks rather than styled text alone.
  • Contrast. Body text meets the WCAG AA contrast standard in both light and dark display modes.
  • Text scaling. The layout is constructed using relative units, such that increasing browser text size enlarges the interface rather than disrupting it.
  • Dark mode, applied automatically according to device setting or configured manually.
  • Reduced motion. Where a device requests reduced animation, transition effects are removed accordingly.
  • Touch target sizing appropriate for finger input rather than a pointing device.
  • Operation without JavaScript is supported for reading, searching and posting. Certain conveniences are unavailable in this mode; no essential function is lost.
  • Optimisation for constrained connections. Pages are constructed to be lightweight, images load progressively, and the platform remains functional on a 3G connection using an older device, reflecting the connection available to a significant proportion of the user base.

2. Known limitations

The following limitations are disclosed directly rather than left for users to discover:

  • Certain older uploaded images lack alternative text, as none was supplied by the uploading user at the time. This is now requested at the point of upload; retroactive correction is not feasible.
  • The accessibility of uploaded PDF documents reflects the practice of the party who created them, which varies considerably.
  • Charts are rendered as images accompanied by a text label. The underlying figures are provided as accompanying text, though the visual form itself is not separately described.
  • The messaging interface is densely arranged on smaller displays, and its keyboard navigation order requires further improvement.

3. Reporting an accessibility issue

Where an aspect of the platform is unusable for a particular user, the support desk should be contacted, describing the intended action, the assistive technology or browser in use, and the point of failure. Accessibility reports are treated as defects requiring remediation, and users are informed of the resulting action.
